Description

The Maternal Fetal Medicine department at Newton-Wellesley Hospital is a dynamic reproductive program with opportunities to counsel patients with genetic issues related to reproductive and prenatal genetics. Common indications for patient care include carrier screening, aneuploidy and diagnostic tests during pregnancy, ultrasound anomalies, reproductive testing including preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), family history of genetic conditions and teratogen risk assessment. This individual also serves as a resource to patients and medical staff regarding genetic issues and is involved in developing new programs for patient and staff as needed to advance the Maternal Fetal Medicine department. The genetic counselor will work closely with patients during stressful times and provide support and education about sensitive issues.

This is a part- time position, 24 to 32 hours.

  • Counselspatients/families around reproductive and prenatal genetic issues (includingcarrier and aneuploidy screening, diagnostic testing and preimplantationgenetic testing (PGT)). This involves patient contact, explanation ofprocedures, probable outcome, all testing coordination, and follow up. Screensand interviews patients to evaluate medical/family information. Recommends andcoordinates additional testing and referrals with referring providers, outsidehospital facilities, and genetic testing laboratories.

  • Implements andcoordinates special programs as needed to accommodate patients and providers.

  • Performs administrativerecord keeping, including chart preparation and records requests, maintenanceof statistics, documentation of encounter (including chart notes, progressnotes, and letters, and other required paperwork for genetic tests orprocedures.

  • Develops andmaintains effective relationships with patients, MFM staff, and other referringproviders. Provideseducation and consultation to referring providers as needed with concerns aboutscheduling, test follow-up, or general queries about non-scheduled patients.

  • Actively updatesknowledge of current trends and developments in the field and genetic communityby reading appropriate professional literature, attending educational meetings,and making use of other available resources for continuing education.

  • Serves as resourceto patients, obstetrical care providers and other clinicians on geneticcounseling issues.

  • Interacts with send-outlaboratories. Calls normal and abnormal results to patients and providers,including calling out results to patients who have not received geneticcounseling when necessary.

  • Participates inresearch projects including patient recruitment, clinical data abstraction, anddata entry maintenance of required computer databases and communication withprincipal investigator and other sites.

  • Performs otherduties as required or assigned, including back-up coverage for other counselorswhen necessary.

  • Qualifications

    Minimum of two years experience in the field of Genetic Counseling, is preferred

    Master s Degree: MS/MA with specialty in Genetics or Genetic Counseling

    Board Eligible or Board Certified by American Board of Genetic Counseling

    Full or Provisional License in Genetic Counseling in Massachusetts will be required prior to start of position

    Good communication skillsespecially in the areas of interpersonal skills and sensitivity in counselingareas.

    Aptitude in basic sciences,especially in the area of genetics.

    Ability to work in stressfulsituations within specific time frames while maintaining a calm, professionalattitude.

    Strong organization skillsand time management are necessary.
